OF@Korea: Linking OpenFlow-enabled Resources in Korea #

OF@Korea is a loosely-coupled OpenFlow testbed by integrating OpenFlow-enabled resources in Korea. This loosely-coupled OpenFlow testbeds integrate OpenFlow-enabled resources managed by several research institutes and universities in Korea. OF@Korea provides a portal-style interface to OpenFlow-enabled resources and interconnections among them. It also assists the transport of flows on the integrated OpenFlow-enabled resources of OF@Korea, based on NetOpen networking services from OF@FIRST.

OF@Korea’s on-going integration is started from spring 2011. OF@Korea is an effort to build an integrated OpenFlow testbed by linking OpenFlow-enabled resource aggregations (RAs) managed by several research institutes and universities in Korea. As of summer 2011, three major entities are collaborating for this work with their own OpenFlow-enabled network substrates. First, OF@FIRST (Future Internet Research for Sustainable Testbed) RA came out of the FIRST project, jointly carried out by ETRI (Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute) and a university team (FIRST@PC: GIST/CNU/Postech/KHU). Inside OF@FIRST RA, the university team is working on prototyping a PC-based virtualized computing/networking platforms using NetFPGA/OpenFlow while ETRI is contributing an OpenFlow-enabled NP-accelerated ACTA-based virtualization platform, denoted as the FIRST platform. Next, KREONET (Korea Research Environment Open NETwork) and KOREN (Korea Advanced Research Network) RAs are respectively providing OF@KREONET and OF@KOREN resources together with domestic R&D network connections for this integration. Each entity has its own Aggregation Manager for managing its OF-enabled resources and corresponding UIs (User Interfaces). Also, they are loosely-coupled by linking FlowVisors, and will be presented to the experimenters through a portal-style interface. Like this, our goal is giving an experimental environment that experimenters can run their services through a portal-like interface on the integrated OF@Korea. Also, the network substrate of OF@Korea is configured by the inter-connection of three OpenFlow-enabled RAs (internally connected by layer-2 VLAN and tunneling), stitched by L2-VLANs. We provide a FlowVisor-level linking among OpenFlow-enabled switches (in several types, from software-only PC-based to commercial ones) and provide a portal-style Interface to experimenters. In summary, we are in a starting phase to build a loosely-coupled integrated OpenFlow testbed in Korea and to showcase potential example services for various networking scenarios.
